She makes history as the first Native American in a presidential cabinet.
Haaland is a former congresswoman from New Mexico and a member of the Pueblo Tribe.
Many local tribes including the Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe say they’ve been supporting Haaland since she first ran for the house in 2018.
She was even invited to their summer pow-wow in 2019.
They say Haaland’s accomplishments highlight what Native youth can hope to achieve.
“It brings a sense of, an indigenous attitude, and timekeeping with our culture, being stewards of mother earth. And what better than a proud kway, a proud Native woman, a strong individual to lead that fight,” said Frank Cloutier, Director of Public Relations.
