General Assembly Approves Election Changes For 2022; GOP Urges Pritzker To Veto Redistricted Maps

Credit Derek Cantù/ NPR Illinois The Illinois General Assembly this week approved a measure making multiple changes to election procedures, including pushing back the 2022 primary election from its usual mid-March date to the end of June. COVID-19 delayed the release of official 2020 U.S. Census data to states, but Democrats who control the legislative process in Illinois trudged forward anyway on their decennial redrawing of legislative district boundary lines to avoid giving Republicans a 50/50 chance at controlling the maps if they weren’t approved by Gov. JB Pritzker by June 30, Democrats also used non-Census data to draw a new map for the Illinois Supreme Court’s five districts for the first time in 60 years, as well as the Cook County Board of Review. But they are waiting to draw new congressional districts, and counties don’t have a hard and fast deadline to redistrict boundaries for seats on county boards.

Mazzochi: You don t need to authorize this bill to get 5G technology

“You don’t need to authorize this bill to get 5G technology,” Mazzochi said during a recent House floor debate on the issue. “One of the key pieces of local control we took away from our municipalities was to tell our units of local government that they could not stop new poles from going up all over the place . Another thing this body didn’t know is real world experience of municipalities with new pole demands. . My district has been the pilot location for the entire state.” Effective immediately, House Bill 2379 would seek to amend the Small Wireless Facilities Deployment Act to provide for the repeal of the measure by Dec. 31, 2026.

Mazzochi pushes for bill for guaranteed admission to University of Illinois

Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) urged an aye vote for her bill that, according to her, would be an initial step for students to have guaranteed admission to the University of Illinois. House Bill 796 amends the Public University Uniform Admission Pilot Program Act by providing the University of Illinois to also admit community college transfer students aside from first-time freshman students under the pilot program. This is a bill that is designed to try to get more people opportunities to get guaranteed admission to the University of Illinois,” Mazzochi said. “I would like to thank Leader Ammons and Chairman Stewart who helped to get the language, and this language has also been agreed to by the University of Illinois. I very much look forward to people in our state being able to get better access to the University of Illinois programs with guaranteed admission program and with that, I ask for an Aye vote.
