president. joining us now, cnn congressional correspondent ryan nobles. ryan, why do trump s lawyers want the u.s. supreme court to read this article so badly? reporter: it is based on the premise the former president and many of his allies have made trying to undercut the credibility of the january 6 select committee. they argue the committee does not have as its specific goal a legislative purpose meaning the reason this committee exists is to draft legislation that would ultimately lead to laws but instead in their mind it is nothing more than an attempt to try and catch either the former president or his allies in some sort of criminal conspiracy that would ultimately lead to criminal charges. now, this is something the committee has soundly rejected. they ve said, indeed. their main goal is a legislative purpose and at the end of all of this they hope to tell a story as to what happened on january 6th and then offer up tangible legislative fixes to prevent something like this fr
this is an opportunity for the courts to prevent the national archives from handing over a whole tronch of documents under the banner of executive privilege. at this point, jake, it is not clear whether the supreme court will even take this case up let alone settle this dispute. ryan, the justice department responded to trump s request? reporter: that s right. the justice department argues that they re siding of course with the biden administration on this and remember it is the white house and the current occupant of the white house that gets to determine where executive privilege lies and in this case they believe the protection of the former president and his interests are outweighed by the interests of the public, the general public and the american people to get to the bottom of what exactly happened on january 6th and that the collection of this information and the distilling of it is necessary by the january 6 select committee. that is their argument. it is going to be of co
vaccines where we have to shut everything down, where there needs to be lockdowns. i think in some ways they are trying to normalize the virus and really put more focus on the idea we ll be living with the virus and learning to take the precautions we can rather than panicking every time there is a new variant or new strain. interesting. i m sure you, like sprabrina, le me every time there is a redistricting announcement in every state you run to see who is getting screwed, who is getting a safer seat, republicans, democrats. how partisan is the state acting, democrats or republicans. one such proposed newly drawn congressional map is in north carolina. it puts former congressman mark walker in a bind. politico reports walker, who is trailing in polls, running for senate there in north carolina, trailing in the polls for the republican primary there, the guy in first place is endorsed by trump but the article goes on to state president donald trump earlier this month privately
clark. he was the person if rosen wouldn t do trump s bidding and rosen didn t. there was a time the president was going to put his own man in as attorney general. reporter: so much scrutiny of those days and weeks that trump was still in office but had lost the presidency. it s a reminder that he s no longer here, we talk about the shadow that looms large over the republican party. the power he has over it. there s a lot of investigating still being done trying to put new pieces of the puzzling together, new information that is continuous oi coming out from some of those people in things like the department of justice during that time. clearly, a lot of new information still to be shared as the senators and lawmakers continue looking into the weeks on what the former president was doing. here on the hill, some milling about from lawmakers because they are in the midst of trying to pass that bipartisan infrastructure bill. definitely not going along as
election that they lose. that is the way american democracy goes away and it is very hard i m just back from a week in washington. it is very hard to try to do bipartisan business with a party, the republican party, that will not be loud and clear about what a threat to our democracy this is. i ll bet it is hard. it s hard to see something meaningful and bipartisan come out of congress these days. let me ask about the second big story, that being the doj now telling the treasury department it must turn trump s tax returns over to the house ways and means committee. do trump s taxes still matter to congress at this point? what would you most want to learn from these returns? well, i think they matter for three ways. two historical and one that is more current. number one, and we need to remember that presidential candidates have traditionally voluntarily provided their tax returns, donald trump did not do that. subsequently, of course, all sorts of questions came up about his busi
