Secrets And Lies On "Reading Between The Lines" - The People's Friend

A new episode of “Reading Between The Lines”, our story podcast in association with the Oddfellows, is out now. In it, the team read another of AP Macdonald’s “The MacPeever Wrangles” series: “The Secrets Of Freemasonry”. Have you listened to some of our previous adventures with Mr and Mrs MacPeever? If so, you’ll know that the story Colin promises isn’t always the story we get! But it seems like being led down the garden path is nothing new when it comes to discussing the Freemasons . . . DC Thomson archivist and podcast guest Barry recently unearthed this feature, published in the “Friend” in 1909, just a few years after our story.

"Reading Between The Lines" Of A Christmas Story - The People's Friend

The latest episode of our “Reading Between The Lines” podcast is out today, featuring a fantastic Christmas story first published in “The People’s Friend” all the way back in 1906. The story is called “The MacPeevers’ Christmas Cards”, and was written for the magazine by a prolific contributor named A.P. Macdonald. It’s the tale of a husband sent on a festive errand that he doesn’t appreciate too much! In the podcast episode itself, I’m joined by Production Editor Judey (who reads the story for us), Marion from our Features team and Barry from our Archives. We all loved the story, and both Marion and Barry came prepared with some fascinating information on historical context, and Mr Macdonald’s other “Friend” contributions.

A Look At The Oddfellows, Our Podcast Sponsor - The People's Friend

A Look At The Oddfellows, Our Podcast Sponsor By Last week, “The People’s Friend” launched “Reading Between The Lines”, a brand new podcast in association with the Oddfellows. We’ve been really pleased with the reception to our first episode, where we discussed a short story called “A Night Among Robbers: An American Adventure”. We featured another story on that episode, too. That was the story of Barbara Spencer. The grandmother of four from Lincolnshire joined the Oddfellows after retiring because of an accident at work. She and her husband, Brian, heard about the Oddfellows after meeting a member on holiday.
