Out of control : Why have more than 300 manatees died in Florida already this winter? Abigail Mercer, The Daytona Beach News-Journal © Nigel Cook/News-Journal A manatee feeds on the vegetation at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Friday, Sept. 4, 2020. Since December, more than 300 manatees have died in waters along the coast of Florida, many of them occurring in the Indian River Lagoon system, according to data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The 211 manatee deaths since Jan. 1 is nearly three times greater than the 77 deaths that occurred during the same period in 2020. Of those, 130 are from the six counties that make up the Indian River Lagoon system: Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach.
