it s in a couple of pockets in syria, but violent extremism exists in multiple forms online, exposure takes place and it s vitriolic and i can t say it will ever go away. it s intergenerational and you can see incidents like this occurring. so the argument could be we don t need to be there, it s a total mess, pull the united states out or if we want to try to affect conditions on the ground we have to be present and we have to be able to have partners that can rely on us, that trust us, listen to our word and can buy into what we are trying to achieve collectively with their help. all right, general marks, thank you so much and thank you very much to clarissa ward who has been doing tremendous reporting from syria for us. day 26 and in the latest tw twist house speaker nancy pelosi wants to move the day of the state of the union address.
like politics. you have a five-minute briefing and you re an expert. you ll be perfect here. this is a fly by the seat of your pants news cycle, as you know. we are in a government shutdown, day 26. no end in sight. they need to give the president more money. call it whatever they want. the president lets the dreamers, daca people be able to stay in the united states. should they do that now while the government is shutdown? do it all at once. re-open i went through a shutdown. i was there through a number of them. the one i was most directly involved in was the budget. we ended up coming out of it, balancing the budget. we weren t there to make political statements. we weren t there to say, what is our base, or anything like that. our purpose was to get the job done. we were anxious to open the government, get a negotiation and a real agreement done. that s what we did. both sides have to have an interest in settling this. look what s happening.
now it s important to remember that this is a high-security event, and that is the rationale that nancy pelosi uses in her letter. she s trying to say to the president, look, you have members of the cabinet here. you have members of the supreme court and you also have the entire congress and the vice president sitting in one room. that is a high-security event. she says unless that government shutdown end and furloughed workers are getting paid it s not worth having the public address because the optics here could look tough for the president of the united states and congress as they both have failed to come to the agreement on how to end this government shutdown, john? another wrinkle. day 26. still no signs of tangible progress for people missing paychecks. coast guard missing first paycheck. cnn s dana bash, michael bender with the wall street journal, carl holtz of the new york times and m.j. lee. security, secret service, other security officers not getting
