Vigils honor legacy of Rep. John Lewis, call for protecting voter rights Sun Sentinel 3 hrs ago Brittany Wallman, South Florida Sun-Sentinel © Brittany Wallman James Tucker of Hallandale tells a crowd of about 80 that he doesn t think he has skipped voting since 1956. The crowd gathered outside the Broward Supervisor of Elections office at the Lauderhill Mall for one of the vigils marking one year since the death of U.S representative John Lewis. At a series of candlelight vigils Saturday night, advocates honored the late civil rights giant Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, and decried efforts to roll back voters’ rights. The so-called “Good Trouble Vigils,” named after Lewis’s famous admonition to “get in good trouble,” took place across America, including all over South Florida. The civil rights leader died one year ago, on July 17, 2020, at age 80. He had pancreatic cancer. He had served in the House of Representatives since 1987.
