RIP Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Prince Buthelezi, as many called him, was a Zulu royal and political enigma. He did a balancing act between the apartheid government and ANC liberation movement. He believed he could change the system from within.
Eleven years later in 1995 Nelson Mandela united our country around the Rugby World Cup. He received criticism from his own people; there was only one black player in the team. Once again bridges were built internally and externally.
The noises made by this bloc going forward and the response of the Western alliance will largely determine whether a new sort of Cold War scenario will develop in future.
