[applause] we are kicking off this series with a fascinating conversation with one of the most accomplished people on the world stage, secretary Madeleine Albright. [applause] what better place to begin van in this Great American . The smithsonian has always been uniquely american. Examining culture and history, exploring artistic expression and scientific innovation. Today, we are an institution of 19 museums, a national zoo, with collections totaling 156 million objects. Still, the story of america is so expensive that we continually work to include more chapters. That necessitates telling a more complex and more diverse story that better reflects who we are as a people. Our first five programs, along with the addition of jackson laboratories, has leveraged a 180 million commitment public funding to drive more than 2 billion in private investment. That same program it possible for connecticut to bring two fortune 500 companies to our state. Protesters gather in charlotte peacefully for a fourth night of demonstrations hours after cell phone video shows the police sheeting of Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed. The video was caught by his widow who began recording. Its unclear what happened in the minutes before the video begins and the video does not clearly show the moment when scott was shot by police. She can be heard pleading with police not to shoot her husband telling them hes suffering from a traumatic brain injury and saying he does not have a weapon.
