AKRON, Ohio Akron Public Schools is set to introduce the district s new superintendent Tuesday at a special school board meeting.
Christina Fowler-Mack was announced as the new head of the district on Friday. She had been serving as Chief of Portfolio Planning, Growth & Management for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Fowler-Mack had been serving that role since July 2013.
The official introduction is expected to come during a midday special school board meeting Tuesday.
Fowler-Mack, 55, is the first female superintendent in APS 174-year history. She will replace Dr. David W. James, who is retiring in June. Dr. James has led the district for 13 years.

Christine Fowler-Mack has officially been named the next superintendent of Akron Public Schools. The district s board of education unanimously voted to approve her contract in a meeting on Tuesday, April 27.
Fowler-Mack said she was deeply humbled and extremely excited to publicly accept the role as the district s next leader. This is a homecoming for Fowler-Mack, who both attended and started her career at the Akron schools. The Akron Public Schools has narrowed the search for its next superintendent to two candidates: Christine Fowler-Mack, chief portfolio officer of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and Sandy Womack, area superintendent of the Columbus City Schools.
The district s board of education will meet on Thursday, April 22, to continue deliberations, and the hope is to make an offer by the end of the month, according to a letter from board president N.J. Akbar. As we prepare for the final decision, rest assured that the board is pleased to know that our next superintendent will be an Akron Public Schools graduate, Akbar said in the letter.
