The authority that manages the Blair County Convention Center approved a contract Friday to make the facility available for COVID-19 vaccinations as soon as plans are in place.
“There’s no date yet, but we have to be ready within 40 hours’ notice,” authority member Matt Stuckey said.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday granted emergency use authorization to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccine shipments could start next week.
Additional vaccines, developed by Moderna and AstraZeneca, are also pending approval and likely to play a role in how soon vaccinations become available locally.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines advising that the first vaccinations will go to health care workers and those with critical health needs, including the elderly and people in nursing homes.
