DAILY EXPRESS (DE): How do you really feel about your design making it to the cover of Time magazine?
Red Hong Yi: Surreal. It’s a dream project. I’ve always admired Time’s covers, and there have been a few artists I hugely respect (JR and Sheperd Fairey) who have collaborated with them. It’s been such an honour and feels like one of the highlights of my career so far. I am also especially proud to have created it with a full team of Malaysians – all 14 of us! KUALA LUMPUR: Contemporary artist Red Hong Yi’s installation work, a world map made entirely of 50,000 green-tipped matchsticks, has made the cover of the latest issue of Time magazine on global climate change.
The photo shoot was held at KongsiKL arts space in Kuala Lumpur, with Red’s artwork being set on fire.
“What could possibly go wrong? Man, if the whole thing engulfed the entire building I guess. But we made sure that it didn’t go anywhere near that, ” says Red about the story behind the artwork.

Headquartered in Singapore, with satellite offices in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Ministry of Design has established itself as a top talent in the region. Its Vanke Triple V building, a triangle that projects skyward at a vertiginous angle, earned founder Colin Seah a reputation for daring architecture. With its LED dazzle camouflage, his Race Robotics Laboratory confirmed a gift for conceptual interiors. The architect’s latest endeavor encompasses 32,700 square feet of lobby and amenity spaces inside a Kuala Lumpur skyscraper by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates that serves as the headquarters of YTL Corporation Berhad, a construction conglomerate.
