Riviera Beach city council race contested over registration rules

RIVIERA BEACH – It may be winter, but the heat is on in the Riviera Beach City race for city council. Of three candidates for the District 4 seat in Singer Island, one was bounced for failing to submit a valid registration check. The incumbent bounced her check but submitted a substitute by the end of the qualifying period, Dec. 8. And the third candidate sued to bounce both opponents for allegedly notarizing their candidate registration forms incorrectly. The race is down to two candidates: incumbent Julie Botel, a retired educator who is currently serving a rotation as chair of the five-member council; and Glen Spiritis, a former Long Beach, N.Y. city manager and Village of Hempstead, N.Y. community development commissioner who has served on Riviera s Housing Commission for the past year and a half.
