In-person learning to increase for students in grades 6-12 | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA Alpena Public Schools students in grades 6-12 will return to face-to-face instruction four days a week starting on April 5. The APS Board of Education on Tuesday voted unanimously to have students return to school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays while leaving Wednesdays as a remote learning day. The board also included in its motion its intent to return to school five days a week in the fall. Students in the district’s elementary schools are currently attending school face-to-face five days a week. Students in grades 6-12 currently go to school in-person two days a week and learn remotely from home the rest of the week.

ALPENA The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education plans to schedule a special board meeting to discuss how Thunder Bay Junior High School and Alpena High School students can have more in-person learning. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. March 2 on the online conferencing software Zoom. Superintendent David Rabbideau provided the board of education with data showing students at Thunder Bay Junior High School and Alpena High School are not performing as well as they have in past years and some of their parents may not be highly satisfied with the hybrid learning model.

ALPENA The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education will allow the development of a newly proposed history course to continue and will make a final determination at a future date about whether students will be able take the class next year. The Perspectives of Democracy course was proposed to the board’s Curriculum and Finance Committee earlier this month, where two of the committee’s three members had concerns with the course.
