A shooting left one person dead in Sleepy Hollow on Monday night.
Village police are investigating a shooting that occurred around 9:30 last night that killed one male and injured another, according to Police Chief Anthony Bueti. The shooting occurred at Margotta Courts Park at 126 Valley St., Bueti said.
An officer heard gunshots and rushed to the scene, where he saw two males shot, Bueti said. Officers and Sleepy Hollow EMS provided emergency aid and the victims were transported to Westchester Medical Center. One victim was treated and released, and the other was not able to survive his injuries, our thoughts and prays are with him and his family, Bueti said.
Because this is an amnesty program, no questions are asked of the person dropping off the firearm and no identification is required, according to the attorney general s office.
This is the second gun buyback event in the Hudson Valley this week. Last Saturday, Attorney General Letitia James announced a buyback event in Poughkeepsie resulted in 79 guns being turned in, including 47 handguns, 26 rifles and shotguns, an assault rifle, and five non-working or antique guns.
“Gun violence is an ongoing threat to our neighborhoods and it endangers New Yorkers every day,” James said in a statement following the Poughkeepsie event. “From taking guns off the streets, to going after those who illegally own guns and cause harm, I am taking every step possible to protect our communities from gun violence and prevent potential tragedies.
Dog shootings and mysterious letters initially put Berkowitz on Intervallo s radar.
On Christmas Eve 1976, Intervallo and Chamberlain were called to probe the shooting of a German Shepherd. By that point, Berkowitz had already shot six people in three separate incidents in the Bronx and Queens, killing one, Donna Lauria. She was 18.
Four months later, the Yonkers cops investigated the shooting of a black Labrador retriever hit by a .22 caliber bullet in the dog s backyard. The Labrador was owned by Sam Carr, the apparent Sam in Son of Sam. Both dog shootings occurred close to Berkowitz s home.
After searching the area, Intervallo and Chamberlain determined the only window that had a direct line to Carr s Warburton Avenue backyard was Berkowitz s apartment 7E.
Hudson Valley community leaders expressed relief as the verdicts came in shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday: guilty of second-degree murder; guilty of third-degree murder; guilty of second-degree manslaughter.
But all made clear that the conviction of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin in the May 25, 2020 killing of George Floyd was just one step in a long path that could lead to social justice.
Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard was overcome with emotion Tuesday evening. She said justice was served because Chauvin’s actions displayed a “reckless disregard for human life.
The verdict provides an “inkling of hope,” Patterson-Howard said, but is not vindication for all the other lives lost at the hands of police officers.
