A police car which mowed down and killed an elderly grandfather on a 999 call-out was racing at an unjustifiable speed given its siren was off, a coroner has ruled.
David Ormesher, 79, was hit at 57mph by the Sussex Police patrol vehicle in Edward Street, Brighton, during the early hours of August 25, 2017 as officers responded to an emergency.
He was pronounced dead at the scene having suffered multiple injuries, including a serious head injury, and a cardiac arrest.
The police car had struck Mr Ormesher about 40 metres from the western-most point of the junction with Upper Rock Gardens in Edward Street at 12.53am.
A member of the public had appeared and was shouting at me what have you done? Having worked previously in the NHS in an A and E department I checked for signs of life, but unfortunately there were none. I did some chest compressions, but while I was doing this the member of the public was actually climbing on my back screaming in my ear, and I had to elbow her off of me. The court heard that the woman in question was found to have been drinking alcohol and had taken prescription medication. Afterwards, she unable to remember what had happened and there had been no other eye witnesses.
A VAN used to deliver hot meals to those unable to afford food has been stolen. Police are searching for a white meals on wheels van that was stolen while delivering in the Uckfield area around 2.00pm this afternoon. The vehicle has Mother Theresa written on the side and the number plate is MT10YUM. A spokesman from Sussex Police said: Please dial 999 if you see it - thank you. Meals on wheels is a program that delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. Many of the people who drive the vans are volunteers, who help delvier food across the county.
A MAN who escaped police by jumping through the back window of a house has been found by a dog hiding in a hedge. Police responded to a disturbance at an address in East Street, Amberley, on Thursday, May 6, where a man was reported to have smashed a number of plates, broken a vacuum cleaner and put holes in a wall. Officers arrived and arrested a man but, after being allowed to collect his belongings, he escaped out of a rear window and vanished. Phantom the police dog To find him, the dog unit was called in. Police dog Phantom, a two-year-old German Shepherd general purpose dog, tracked away from the property and onto the South Downs.
