David Ntekim-Rex
Sir: One of my lecturers in the Department of English at the University of Lagos was Dr (Mrs) Yewande Ntekim-Rex. When I read the news of the death of David Ntekim-Rex by armed robbers in the Jibowu area of Lagos, I hoped that he won’t be in any way related to her.
My worst fears were confirmed by Roy Mustang, a cousin of the deceased who said that the late David was the middle son of the academic. According to him, the deceased – a 22-year old brilliant systems engineer was dropped off by a friend at Jibowu and he was to take a bus home when heartless robbers attacked him to collect his Samsung phone. He was murdered when he allegedly resisted giving them.
On the night of Friday, January 15, 2021, 22-year-old David Ntekim-Rex was making his way home from work when robbers accosted him in the Jibowu area of Yaba, Lagos, dispossessed him of his belongings, shot him and left the young Computer Engineer for dead.
Relatives and eyewitnesses say when Ntekim-Rex was taken to the hospital, he was denied emergency treatment because a police clearance had yet to arrive.
A detachment of police officers who arrived at the scene of the robbery were more interested in the laptop the robbery victim had on him than in making sure he received urgent treatment from doctors.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday condemned the abduction and killing of security operatives by terrorists and bandits, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to end his ‘lethargic’ approach by taking urgent steps to tackle terrorism in the country.
The main opposition party also called for an inquest into the role played by the police in the killing of David Ntekim-Rex by suspected armed robbers at Jibowu, Lagos State.
The party also urges the president to listen to the voice of Nigerians, and rejig the security system.
The PDP also lamented that the escalated acts of terrorism in the country has now worsened by incessant attack on security operatives, the latest being the abduction of no fewer than 18 police operatives by bandits in Kaduna State, “further highlighted by the failures of the president to coordinate an effective fight against terrorism in the country.”
