RRW: Wesley Kiptoo, Joyce Kimeli Win NCAA 5000m Titles

(12-Mar) Iowa State’s Wesley Kiptoo and Auburn’s Joyce Kimeli won the 5000m titles on the penultimate day of the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas today, while the men of Oregon and women of Brigham Young took the distance medley relay titles with superb anchor-leg runs.

Kiptoo dominated the men’s race, running away from the field to win in a championships record of 13:23.77. Wearing black knitted gloves (he later said his hands were cold), Kiptoo started the race aggressively, splitting the first 400m in 59.8 seconds, and the first 800m in 2:01.1. (09-Mar) A year ago this Thursday America’s top collegiate track and field teams had gathered in Albuquerque for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico. There had only been a handful of COVID-19 cases in the United States so far, but the warning signs were there that the first pandemic of the 21st century was about to sweep America. Things unraveled quickly in Albuquerque.

(09-Mar) For the first time in its 35-year history the Los Angeles Marathon Presented by Asics will take place in the fall and will use an updated course, organizers announced yesterday. Since its inception in 1986, the race was held in March every year but two (May in 2009 and February in 2016), and this year it will be held on Sunday, November 7. That’s the same day as the TCS New York City Marathon, the world’s largest, which is traditionally held on the first Sunday in November.
1996 Olympic Trials Champ Paul McMullen Dies in Skiing Accident

(05-Mar) Paul McMullen, the 1996 USA Olympic Team Trials 1500m champion who would run a lifetime best of 3:33.89 for that distance five years later, has died according to several people prominent in the track and field community in Michigan where McMullen, grew up, lived and attended college at Eastern Michigan University. The cause of death was said to be a skiing accident which occurred in Northern Michigan, but no other details were yet available. McMullen was 49.
