The sweet smell of Tatonut donuts fills the air on Government Street in Ocean Springs. The donut shop has recently reopened.
As the sun rises in Ocean Springs, so does the dough at Tatonut. The shop reopened two weeks ago after being closed for over five months after the owner, David Mohler, passed away in January.
It’s now being managed by his daughter, Katelyn. For her, taking over the family business is a role she’s practically been preparing for her whole life. “I got started basically when I was born. I’ve probably been in this building longer than my actual house.”

Iconic TatoNut Donut Shop gearing up to reopen
Updated May 04, 2021;
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. There’s a slew of activity going on inside Ocean Springs’ iconic TatoNut Donut Shop.
No, there are no customers inside yet but there’s remodeling and renovations going on as the shop prepares for what they hope will be a grand reopening this month.
TatoNut’s doors were closed to business on Jan. 10 two days before the passing of owner David Mohler at the age of 61. As wife Theresa, and daughter Katelyn grieved along with their large family and, indeed, the entire community the doors remained closed.
Ten years ago this week the city of Corvallis began an exotic experiment: fareless transit.
As in no money or tokens or transfers or coupons change hands when you board a Corvallis Transit System bus.
The response was tremendous, said Tim Bates, the cityâs transit coordinator.
âWe experienced a 39% increase in ridership the first year that we were fareless,â Bates said. âWe had to tweak some of the service to keep up with demand. Passengers were thrilled that they no longer had to have exact change or keep track of their coupons/passes.â
Passengers are thrilled these days because neither the coupons nor the coin exchanges is a good idea during a pandemic.
