To prepare his background for a Zoom debate Sunday, Newton Ward 2 city council candidate Bryan Barash cleared all of his campaign signs and materials away from view, leaving in place a single item: a rainbow flag with a peace symbol.
âAbout two minutes into showing up, someone said, Hey, he can t have that flag in the background, â Barash said. âI said it was just a rainbow peace flag, and all of a sudden there was shouting â everyone started shouting over one another.â

Housing, the environment, racism and voting topped the Youth Commission’s agenda during a Wednesday City Council candidates’ forum, as members asked about their viewpoints ahead of the March 16 special election.
John Oliver and Madeline Ranalli, candidates for the Ward 1 at-large seat and Bryan Barash, Tarik Lucas, and David Micley, running for the Ward 2 councilor-at-large position, made their pitches during the Zoom event.
The two seats opened after former Ward 2 Councilor-at-Large Jake Auchincloss gave his notice when he won the 4th District House seat in November and Ward 1 Councilor-at-Large Allan L. “Jay” Ciccone Jr., died Nov. 7, 2020.
When voters decide on the winners, the City Council will be back to its full membership of 24.
