A budget of US$1.98 billion will be required to meet these needs Format Kinshasa, 04 February 2021. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to face a complex and deep humanitarian crisis. 19.6 million people will need assistance and protection in 2021, an increase from 15.6 million at the beginning of 2020. In 2020, the humanitarian situation in the DRC has been especially difficult. Armed conflict and violence, epidemics, natural disasters, and the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 have considerably exacerbated already existing vulnerabilities, in a context marked by a structural lack of access to essential services. Despite these challenges, the humanitarian community was able to assist 6 million people thanks to the efforts of partners and the generosity of donors.

Daily Noon Briefing Highlights – 22 January 2021 Democratic Republic of the Congo The Humanitarian Coordinator, David McLachlan-Karr, issued a statement on 21 January condemning recent massacres, abductions and other human rights violations against civilians by armed elements in Beni Territory, North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. More than 150 people – most of them women and children – have died because of violent attacks between 11 December 2020 and 10 January 2021. At least 100 people have been kidnapped and injured over the same period. Looting of health facilities, natural resources, and burning down of houses have also been reported. “The situation is as alarming as it is unacceptable”, said McLachlan-Karr. He added, “I strongly condemn these acts of violence which strongly contribute to increasing peoples’ vulnerability.
