A GROUP of friends from Sussex are providing aid for a leper colony in India as the country is ravaged by a new wave of Covid. Liza Tong, Diets Verschuren, Mimi Khan, John Halpern and his wife Taline are raising funds to source food and medicine for the colony. It comes as hospitals and crematoriums in India are overwhelmed, with some people forced to turn to the black market to buy oxygen canisters. The friends, from Brighton, Peacehaven and Newhaven, are trying to raise £350 every month to keep people in the colony alive as the price of food rockets.

A Fresh Start in New Bedford [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]
A program called New Bedford Fresh Start is asking for the public s help in assisting individuals and families in need. Fresh Start is operated through the City of New Bedford s Office of Community Service. The program has provided housewares and furniture to families who lost most of their possessions in recent fires in New Bedford. As a consequence, the inventory at Fresh Start needs a boost.
Volunteers will be collecting household items on Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Municipal Parking Lot at William and Sixth Streets, near New Bedford City Hall. Residents are asked to donate gently used housewares like dishes or toasters, to help people start over.
New Bedford Non-Profit Purchasing Furniture Store Site
NEW BEDFORD A furniture shop is set to become the new home for one of New Bedford’s oldest non-profit organizations.
Child and Family Services, which began as the New Bedford Orphans’ Home in 1843, is under agreement to purchase the property at 965 Church Street that is the current home of Regal House Furniture. Regal House is closing down its New Bedford facilities and moving all operations to its Fairhaven location.
Child and Family Services is looking to relocate and combine the services provided at its longtime facility at 1061 Pleasant Street along with those offered at 543 North Street into one facility on the Church Street property. It would utilize one half of the existing facility there as a mental health counseling center, with the other half serving as the home of a 24-hour-a-day inpatient facility.
