Detroit saw a slight drop in homicides and non-fatal shootings last year, law enforcement leaders said Thursday, a welcome change that runs opposite to many other cities that have seen substantial increases in violent crime.
Chief James White said he was encouraged by the figures, which showed a 4% fall in homicides and a 9% fall in non-fatal shootings. But he also said the figures were too high to celebrate.
It’s no cause to celebrate, but Detroit can say something that most major cities can’t: after murders soared in 2020, the city saw criminal homicides fall 5% in 2021.
