The Houston government has amended provincial cap-and-trade regulations to exempt Nova Scotia Power and ratepayers from $165 million in pollution payments the paperwork needed to deliver a promise it announced last year.
Nova Scotia Power confirmed Thursday that it will once again fail to meet the provincial renewable electricity standard, but suggested shareholders should not have to pay a $10-million penalty.
Nova Scotia Power is negotiating with the owners of the recently reopened Donkin mine in Cape Breton to secure a domestic source of coal. The company made the disclosure Wednesday under questioning at hearings into its application for an 11.6 per cent rate increase by 2024.
