Unemployment scams and fake claims are taking different forms, but if you are a victim of unemployment fraud, it means your personal information has been compromised.
Mary Kopley of Loudonville was surprised to get some letters from the Labor Department about benefits she never applied for. I got two letters a couple of weeks ago on the same day from the Department of Labor. They were postmarked a week apart. I opened the earliest postmark, and it said that they needed more information to continue processing my claim, said Kopley. Obviously I had not filed a claim. The second letter said to please disregard anything, that it appeared that I was a victim of fraud and that I didn t have to do anything else. That was it. A week later, I got the third letter, which included the debit card that tells me that I had been approved for unemployment insurance, and please activate this card.
