A BOOK featuring the work of a number of artists depictions of West Bay has been published. The book, titled West Bay: A Visual Journey from Bridport Harbour to West Bay looks at 22 artists who have been drawn to West Bay over the years. West Bay, compiled and written by Bridport woman Marion Taylor, features several of these works alongside historical information, amusing anecdotes and words from some of the more contemporary artists. It follows the timeline of West Bay, spanning more than 200 years, beginning with the works of William Daniell and JMW Turner and finishing with more recent artists such as Alex Lowery and David Inshaw. The book takes the reader back to before West Bay even had its named, known as Bridport Harbour until the arrival of the railway in the 1880s when the name West Bay was deemed more appropriate.

I may not have a Zoom hotline to Downing Street, but I could have guessed that if Carrie Symonds were going to undertake a redecoration programme in the Prime Ministerial quarters, then it would be to Lulu Lytle and the aesthetic she’s honed as co-founder of design label Soane Britain that she’d turn for inspiration.
Alf Stockham: visionary intensity
Alfred Stockham, the artist and teacher, who has died aged 87, was a gifted painter in oils whose work never quite achieved the popularity and acclaim it deserved.
Tending to work on a small scale, he made highly individual, well-designed, distinctively textured and patterned paintings, often of lyrical and visionary intensity. Intelligent, warm-hearted and generous-spirited, he had an ability to keep surprising his audience.
Although there were certain subjects he favoured, such as boats and the beach, he would vary his interpretation from abstraction to broad-brushed realism, but always articulated with great conviction.
His early work demonstrated abilities as a draughtsman of almost Pre-Raphaelite ingenuity, and his paintings followed this rigorous structuring, or moved towards the intimism of Bonnard and Vuillard.
