For more than a month and a half, Saint Vincent Hospital’s administration and hundreds of nurses have been locked in a tense strike over staffing levels.
The standoff comes at a crossroads time for unions: their number of members has been on a steady decline for decades, and a high-profile unionization vote among Amazon warehouse workers in Alabama was voted down in early April.
At the same time, unions have gained strength at two other healthcare spots in Central Massachusetts: UMass Medical School in Worcester and Milford Regional Medical Center. The federal government has two strong union backers in President Joe Biden and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, the former Boston mayor.

MARION A one-mile-long, half-paved road stretching from Marion Golf Club to Brainard Marsh confounded area residents and board members alike during the Selectmen’s meeting on April 6.
Parties debated whether Cross Neck Road truly lies on public or private land, and who should be charged with maintaining a road that, despite its normality in nearly every light, has proved enigmatic in ownership.
David Gulley, of the Cross Neck Road Homeowners Association, presented evidence to suggest the road was indeed a public way. It is listed as such, he said, on the Marion website and in town records; cited as such by the land title company and twice by the town council.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey said his demands that Congress eliminate more than $400 billion in Federal Reserve emergency lending powers approved under the CARES Act and to prohibit such programs in the future should have come as a surprise to no one.
“Contrary to what Democrats suggested, this is not in any way an attempt to hamstring the Biden administration or weaken the economy,” Toomey said. The provision he insisted on proved to be a sticking point in negotiations for a $900 billion covid relief bill this week.
