It s almost cherry-blossom time and this year, Pritchard is in | iNFOnews | Thompson-Okanagan s News Source

Image Credit: Submitted/Beth Cavers April 08, 2021 - 7:00 AM Cherry blossoms will burst into life over the next couple of weeks and, for the first time, will stretch all the way from Osoyoos almost to Kamloops. But, just when they can be viewed in each region depends totally on the weather. “It’s notoriously hard to predict,” said David Geen, owner of Coral Beach Farms, the biggest cherry grower in Canada. “It’s temperature-dependent. If you get four or five days in a row of warm, sunny days, the buds will move along very rapidly. If, on those same four or five days, there’s a high of eight or ten degrees, cloudy and windy, they would just park and not move at all.”

What those helicopters were doing in Okanagan orchards last week | iNFOnews | Thompson-Okanagan s News Source

Image Credit: SUBMITTED/BC CHERRIES ASSOCIATION February 16, 2021 - 8:00 AM Compared to last week’s deep freeze, weather in B.C.’s Southern interior will be almost balmy in the days ahead which should take some of the pressure off area farmers. As was reported by people living near cherry farms up and down the Okanagan valley, helicopters were deployed to orchards as temperatures plummeted. They stirred up the air as well as a heavy dose of community comment. While some area residents complained about the noise and the disturbance, Glen Lucas from the B.C. Fruit Growers Association explained that it’s imperative for farmers to get out there when the mercury falls.

Scenic Canyon parkland swap proposed

Share to There is a proposed land swap for Scenic Canyon Regional Park. The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) has approved using the alternative approval process for a proposed exchange. The RDCO has a conditional agreement to acquire approximately ten hectares of new park land and receive an estimated .86-hectare Statutory Right of Way for Scenic Canyon Regional Park from property owned by David Geen. The exchanged lands will provide for future trail and park connections between Scenic Canyon Regional Park, the Mission Creek Greenway and to City of Kelowna parks and trails. The RDCO would also receive approximately $454,000 in net compensation for the difference in land valuation to be used for future park land acquisition. In exchange, the Regional District would transfer 8.67-hectares of land in the park to Geen.
