Races set for city, school board election

The races are now set for the election for local city and school board positions. The filing deadline for the non-partisan election was noon Tuesday. A sufficient number of candidates filed to force primaries for races for the Leavenworth City Commission and the Lansing Board of Education. The primary election will take place Aug. 3. The general election will be Nov. 2. Members of the City Commission are elected to at-large positions. This means each commissioner represents the entire city rather than a specific ward or district. There are three positions on the Leavenworth City Commission that are up for election this year. Eleven people filed as candidates for the three positions. They are incumbents Mike Griswold, Jermaine Wilson and Mark Preisinger as well as Maren Hart, Griff Martin, Edd Hingula, Ted Davis, Christopher Murphy, Michael Lay, Michael A. Bunch and Thomas J. Beal Jr., according to a list from the County Clerk’s Office.

Submissions strongly oppose Griffith property rezone

MORE than 500 submissions have opposed a change to the current territory plan that could see a Griffith property rezoned to allow for medium-density units. Part of the government’s Demonstration Housing Project, an initiative designed to help urban renewal, it would involve bulldozing a home on Blaxland Street to make way for a two-storey, four-unit “Manor House” with nine car park spaces. It also requires a variation to the RZ1 criteria to allow for medium-density units on a residential block. Written comments about the draft variation were invited until April 26 and out of the 526 comments only five of them supported what the government is proposing.

Woden tram looms as an expensive millstone

“There is a danger Light Rail Stage 2 will become an expensive millstone round ratepayers’ necks,” says letter writer DAVID DENHAM, of Griffith. JACK Kershaw proposed an alternative route for the tram from Civic to Woden (CN January 28). A more fundamental question is whether the tram will be a good investment? There is a danger Light Rail Stage 2 will become an expensive millstone round ratepayers’ necks. The ACT government has now invited bids for a “design and technical consortia to provide consultancy services required to develop The Light Rail Stage 2 – City to Woden project”.  It is not clear how these services can be provided when the route has not been finalised.
