For Rhode Island, winter wasn t as ferocious as other parts of the Northeast Jack Perry, The Providence Journal © The Providence Journal / David DelPoio Alan Graves shovels the slushy snow in the front entry of Riverside Creamery in Riverside on February 2. The Providence area was below normal for snowfall in December and January but a snowy February put it above average for the season, according to the National Weather Service. A stormy February gave Providence more snow than normal during meteorological winter, but Rhode Island seems to have ducked the wintry punch that walloped much of the Northeast. Providence had 29.6 inches of snow in the three months that comprise meteorological winter December, January and February, which is about 3 inches more than normal, according to Andrew Leconte, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts.
