AUBURNÂ â The DeKalb County Commissioners Monday approved a modified contract with the Elevatus architecture firm to complete construction documents for a new jail.
In January, the commissioners hired the Fort Wayne company to design a new county jail for a fee not to exceed $925,000.
Last week, two of the three commissioners indicated they do not support building a jail right now. Commissioners Bill Hartman and Todd Sanderson said they want to wait until a spike in construction costs subsides. However, they approved signing a contract with Elevatus to complete drawings for a new jail.
Monday, architect Tony Vie presented an amended contract that removes work other than drawings with a new price of $465,000.

Everyone in the legislature agreed on House Bill 1006. But how you describe the new law is an interesting proposition.
The legislation received unanimous support and was in response to state and national protests last year over police brutality against minority communities. It was spurred specifically by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, for which a police officer is now behind bars.
But Republicans are using masterful spin – “Historic New Law Supports Public Safety Officers,” a headline on a legislative mailer says.
The other side says “Supporting Law Enforcement” in bold with a picture of two police officers and notes the law boosts investment in public safety.
Councilman Mike Walter introduced the resolution:
âThe Common Council of the City of Auburn, taking note of the KKK event anticipated in our community on April 3 and that did not take place, commends Mayor Michael D. Ley for his statement issued March 31 repudiating the KKKâs âideologies of hatred and intoleranceâ and stating firmly that âthere is no place for intolerance in our community.â The Common Council joins Mayor Ley in calling for a community of âmutual respect, inclusion and caring for our neighbors.ââ
The Texas-based Church of the Ku Klux Klan spent two months promoting online its plans for an âIndiana White Unity Meet and Greetâ at an undisclosed private property in Auburn.
