Minister Martin announces arrangements for the National Famine Commemoration 2021 on Sunday 16 May
Catherine Martin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and Chair of the National Famine Commemoration Committee has today announced arrangements for this year s National Famine Commemoration.
The ceremony, which will be led by President Michael D. Higgins, will take place in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin at 12pm on Sunday 16 May and will include military honours and a wreath laying ceremony in remembrance of all those who suffered or perished during the Famine. President Michael D. Higgins will give the keynote address at the ceremony. Wreaths will also be laid by H.E. Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Hazel Chu, and the Chairman of Dublin Cemeteries Trust, Mr. David Bunworth.

It is five years since the Glasnevin Wall was unveiled, opened with the lofty ambition to remember everyone, friend and foe, who died during Ireland’s revolutionary years between 1916 and 1923.
The Necrology Wall, to give it its proper title, was inspired by the Ring of Remembrance at Ablain-Saint-Nazaire in France which, from 2014, has remembered 580,000 soldiers from all sides killed in the first World War.
Speaking in April 2016, the then chairman of the Glasnevin Trust, John Green, said every name represented “a story of heartbreak, no matter what side the person served on or indeed for those innocently caught up in the conflict”.
