Johnson marks his return to the political arena, shaking up comptroller’s race

Council Speaker Corey Johnson officially announced his run for city comptroller Tuesday after weeks of dropping hints, assembling a campaign team and signing up for a candidate forum before he’d formally declared.
His entry upends the dynamics of the contest and marks Johnson’s return to the political arena after dropping out of the mayoral primary in September and largely retreating from the public eye for six months.

The future of New York City will in many ways begin to take shape in the June primary, when more than 30 New York City council seats and the race for mayor will be largely decided. Gabe Tobias, a political strategist who helped catapult Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to victory in 2018, is now the director of the recently formed progressive PAC called Our City, which is aimed at supporting upwards of 15 Council candidates. Our City is now vetting more than 350 candidates to determine who best fits their values, and looks to raise a total of $5 million in support of candidates.

During a mayoral forum this week that focused on what types of state policies the candidates would pursue in Albany, City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca, a left-leaning contender in the race, was asked how he would handle working with Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The forum s moderator Ben Max of Gotham Gazette, reminded Menchaca that in the 2018 gubernatorial election he endorsed Cuomo s opponent, the actress-turned-progressive-activist Cynthia Nixon.
