I’ve mentioned before my great love of birds. The first sighting of a springtime robin lifts the spirits after a long winter. Watching and feeding the hummingbirds all summer is such a pleasure, and observing the antics of the wintertime snow buntings is a real kick. And of course, my favourite sassy chickadees are a joy all year long. One bird I could easily live without, though, is one I haven’t even laid eyes on. I refer to the woodpecker who channels his inner rooster at 5:30 a.m. each morning, not by crowing but by hammering on the hollow trunk of a dead tree not far from my bedroom window. He keeps up his intermittent drum solo for several hours then is not heard from until the next morning. If he would only realize that tasty bugs are much easier to find on our lawn, then I could enjoy a quiet morning sleep.
