Former Sherborn Police Chief Richard Thompason sues town over firing

SHERBORN – Former Sherborn Police Chief Richard Thompson said the allegations used against him by the town to fire him in October have made him “unemployable” to ever work in law enforcement again. “This has been an extremely trying experience,” said Thompson on Friday. “I’ve dealt with and fought cancer twice in my life. Without question, this was far more taxing on myself and my family, my friends and my colleagues. I’ve never been more uncomfortable, sick to my stomach, embarrassed belittled.” Through his attorney Joseph Sulman, Thompson filed a lawsuit in Middlesex Superior Court earlier this month against the town of Sherborn, Town Administrator David Williams, Interim Police Chief David Bento, the then-members of the Selectboard who terminated his contract – Jeff Waldron, Charles Yon, George Morrill and Paul Derenis – as well as an attorney hired by the town, Maura Gallagher.

Sherborn awaits updates on coronavirus vaccine Sarah Freedman, Correspondent             SHERBORN At the Jan. 21 Sherborn Select Board meeting, Board of Health Chairwoman Daryl Beardsley provided a progress report on what was going on in the state and town of Sherborn in terms of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the phases in which people could expect to receive one.             She said the number-one question the board gets asked is about COVID-19 vaccinations. She noted there are links to the Department of Public Health website so residents can stay up-to-date on the issue.             “In short, they’re working through phases of rollout,” she said. “As you know, the medical professionals were first. First responders are in process at the moment.”

Sherborn Police Chief Search Committee to seek public safety consultant Sarah Freedman, Correspondent SHERBORN With Lieutenant David Bento voted in as the appointed interim police chief at the Dec. 3 Select Board meeting, the newly created Police Chief Search Committee is hard at work to find a permanent candidate for the position.             The eight-member committee includes Select Board members Eric Johnson and George Morrill, who is chairing it; Chuck Yon, Paul DeRensis and Jeff Waldron; Fire Chief Zach Ward, Vicki Rellas from the Personnel Board, who serves as vice chair, and Michael Richards, a retired police chief with 26 years of experience on the force.

David Bento was appointed as interim chief unanimously at the Select Board’s meeting of Dec. 3. The appointment became effective Dec. 4 and carries with it all of the “strong chief” authority, with some minor nuances of Select Board inclusion on certain personnel actions (as detailed in the agreement). The Sherborn Police Officers Association has been notified and its support of Interim Chief Bento and the department is requested. Also, Town Administrator David Williams thanked the officers for their patience and professionalism while the town works its way through resolving unprecedented challenges affecting all at work and at home.
