“The suppression was quite rapid largely due to the great turnout we had from our members and the number of apparatuses we took out there,” said David Balding, Nipawin’s fire chief. “We got there and it was extending into the grass a little bit that we were able to suppress and make sure the rest of the building was looked after. That was put out without incident.” With the fire located in a rural setting and no hydrants on hand, Balding said the department was required to bring the water with them. “We had to make sure the surrounding bush was sufficiently wet down so that any residential sparks were extinguished and it’s not going to cause problems as well.”
