New Zealand softball greats have joined the tributes to Ty Stofflet – the legendary American softball pitcher famous for a gripping 20 innings duel with Kiwi great Kevin Herlihy. The left-handed Stofflet took a record 33 strikeouts and batted in the winning run in a four-hour epic with New Zealand at the 1976 world championships in Lower Hutt.

Ty Stofflet, the legendary American softball pitcher was who a great friend and rival of Kevin Herlihy, has died, aged 79. Once labelled the fastest pitcher in the world, Stofflet died, aged 79, in his native Pennsylvania on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).
