Obviously are very personal opinions. As a member of our military, i truly believe that there are some things that are more important than me, which is why necessary, if sacrifice myself for the things that we believe in as americans, our constitution, freedom, democracy, our rights, our way of life. And i know that theres a certain amount of risk thats inherent in that, not necessarily as being a service member. But democracy is necessarily open. That is one of the Cultural Values that we have. If if wewonder some of what and it means to be american, some of what it means to be america, in our response to try to assure citizens of security. Theres no such thing as perfect security. Got littlee i said, girls and theres a line in finding nemo. If you never let anything happen to them, then nothings ever going to happen to them. So its kind of a cute way to going to be were america and everything that america stands for, we cant, as citizens, expect our government to provide 100 security
For his best friend. Steve admiral dave thomas, as you reflect on the morning of september 11th, 2001, how did your day begin . Admiral thomas i was in the navys defense review. I had been there for about well this was culminating an 18 month project. So ive been on the job for about 17 and a half months. My day began with a series of meetings and i was representing my boss in a meeting with another admiral in the pentagon. And we were discussing the navys contribution to National Defense and really just putting the finishing touches on our input to the defense review. Steve explained that project. What was the review all about and what was your specific role . Admiral thomas every four years, all the services and the joint staff and the department of defense have a report to congress. It was just a regular day. I started my day at bryant park. Liz lang has something a little extra. Theres a great item on the front page. President bush is in florida encouraging reading programs and california grand jury decided against investigating gary condit. Toby of maine is our pet of the day. Were taking a timeout plus a preview of the latest fall tv shows. You are watching fox friends. Were nuts about nuts. I was in the battle cap. We were starting a norad exercise. We have a couple of those a year. Also because of the exercise we had the fighters on alert with a little extra gas. With some more weapons on board than they normally would. The morning of the 11th i received a call from an individual i assumed was the exercise coordinators asking of a notification of a hijacking situation app
