REGINA The Regina Pats are preparing for the season to get under way next week, after arriving in the Western Hockey League s East Division Hub on the weekend. “I think everyone’s extremely excited to go,” said Logan Nijhoff, one of the Pats alternate captains in 2019. “It’s been 366 days, so everyone should be in the best shape of their life.” The seven WHL teams competing in the hub arrived in Regina on Saturday. Dorm rooms at the University of Regina and Luther College will be their home for the next two months. The players haven’t been in a team setting since March 2020.

It has been just about a year since the Regina Pats were on the ice as a team.
That changes on Friday as barring any last-minute complications, they will have their first practice of the year as a one-week training camp begins to get ready for the start of a shortened 24-game season against their divisional opponents.
Head Coach Dave Struch says they are one call away from getting things going.
“Our first practice is tomorrow (Friday) night at the Brandt Centre. “Struch said on Thursday. “We got our second tests on Wednesday morning and will get those results back before 10 o’clock tonight (Thursday). We were originally hoping if we got the results back early enough that we would skate Thursday, but the league said they want everyone to go through protocol and have their first practice at the Brandt Centre just so they know what is going on with entrances and exits and stuff like that. Planting her ski poles into the hard snow and pushing off with one foot and then the other, Emily Cameron’s skis glide forward as she propels herself through Wascana Park.
The wind chill of -32 C doesn’t scare the 86-year-old away from the sport she loves. Bundled up in a warm jacket, snow pants, large mittens, fleece headband and toque, her laughter rings through the air as she proclaims she isn’t cold at all.

The last time the Regina Pats were on the ice was March 13 when they lost at home to the Winnipeg Ice.
A game scheduled for two nights later was cancelled due to COVID-19 and you know the rest of the story.
On Friday, the WHL announced the plan is to play a shortened 24-game season starting sometime next month after a plan is given final approval from health authorities in each provincial and state jurisdiction. It is anticipated the approvals will be received soon.
Pats Head Coach Dave Struch knows the season isn’t much, but it is better than anything. He says it is more about player development than wins and losses.
