Welcome to bbc news. Hurricane irma is continuing to sweep its way across the caribbean on route to the us coast, leaving a path of devastation. Cuba is the latest island to be hit. The category five storm made landfall off the North Eastern coast overnight bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Communities have lost power and communication is becoming increasingly difficult in more remote areas. The bahamas have largely been spared after the storm changed track. This is irmas trajectory. Its expected to make landfall with us coast tomorrow, before heading inland. In florida, more than five Million People have been told to evacuate. Thats over a quarter of the population. And theres another hurricane coming up behind irma in the atlantic. Jose has strengthened to a category four, driving winds of 125 miles an hour and forecasters warn it could strengthen still further. Hurricane irma continues to leave a trail of destruction across the caribbean, today hitting the largest island cu bas northern coastline, cutting power and engulfing villages in storm surges. It hit in the early morning, with winds of up to 160mph. More than a Million People have been moved to safety, along with thousands of tourists, many of them british. The hurricane is expected to reach florida early tomorrow, landing initially in the florida keys and then moving across the south west of the state. The most powerful storm to hit cuba in more than 80 years is moving slowly along the islands north coast, causing floods and widespread damage. The government has extended its maximum alert to more provinces, as well as havana. Fierce winds from Hurricane Irma have ripped off rooftops, uprooted trees and torn down power lines. One Million People, nearly a tenth of cubas population, have been evacuated. Our correspondent will grant is in havana with the latest on the situation. Cubans had hoped they might avoid the worst of the hurricane. They had no such luck. With the full force of a category 5 storm, the hurricane tore through the islands northern shore. The storm surge almost completely engulfing several small fishing villages. Electricity and communication links are out across swathes of the country. Now, britain, france, and the netherlands, which oversee territories in the caribbean, have been criticised for being slow to respond to the crisis. A state of emergency has been declared on the British Virgin islands where an aid operation is under way. The bbcs laura bicker has the latest from tortola, the largest of the islands. There is now a sense of desperation and fear in tortola. People are hungry, tired and in need of basic supplies. This was the line of traffic trying to get into the main town on the island.
