SCOTLAND is still lagging behind the rest of Europe when it comes to minimum and living wages despite the much-heralded UK Government announcement of rises last week. From last Thursday the National Living Wage was increased by 2.2% to £8.91 and for the first time it will include 23-year-olds and 24-year-olds. The National Minimum Wage, which applies to those from school leaving age to 22, has gone up by 2% from £8.20 to £8.36 for 21-22-year-olds, 1.7% from £6.45 to £6.56 for those aged 18-20 and 1.5% from £4.55 to £4.62 for under-18s, with the Apprentice Rate rising 3.6% from £4.15 to £4.30. But Scotland’s workers’ representatives believe that the UK Government has not gone nearly far enough.
