Four weeks ago today, the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Government put up barriers blocking access on four roads within the reservation.It’s prevented driving access to dozens of private homes with the reservation boundaries.A lawyer representing many of the residents through the involved title companies says she will be seeking legal action if the barricades are not lifted today.
Tribal leaders in Lac du Flambeau said they were asserting sovereignty in demanding long overdue payment for roads used by non-Native residents, who are now unable to drive home.
Failed negotiations over road access have led to the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa putting cement barriers down on four roads.Those barriers have blocked access to private homes within the tribe’s reservation.The issue goes back nearly 10 years ago when right-of-way easements on four roads on reservation land expired.
