Redevelopment of Schooner Hotel in Madeira Beach moves forward

MADEIRA BEACH â In a close 3-to-2 vote, the city commission approved Planned Development (PD) zoning for the expansion of the beachfront Schooner Hotel on Gulf Boulevard at 146th Avenue. The vote, on first reading, took place after a two-hour hearing in which city staff, the property developer and owners, and interested citizens spoke at the April 14 commission meeting. The new hotel, which replaces an aging hotel at the site, had first been proposed as a Planned Development in early 2019. At that time, it was touted by the architect John Bodziak as âa standout, landmark hotel along the lines of the Vinoy and Don Cesar.â The plan was for a five-story, 40-unit hotel with beachfront restaurant/bar, and a two-story building across the street with 16 hotel suites and retail space. A footbridge over Gulf Boulevard would connect the two properties.

No election, but Madeira Beach gets new commissioner

MADEIRA BEACH â There was no election in the city this year, but there will be a new commission member. District 3 Commissioner Doug Andrews ran for reelection and faced no opposition. So he keeps his seat and will begin his second term. In District 4, Commissioner John Douthirt decided not to go for another term after serving for four years. His replacement is Dave Hutson, who was the only candidate for the seat. Hutson and Andrews were sworn in at the March 10 City Commission meeting to begin two-year terms. Dave Hutson Hutson is the new face on the commission. He brings an engineering background to the commission, with a career spent at Goodyear Tire, where he developed tires for race cars, including Indy and Formula 1, and vehicles from the Ford Windstar Van to the GT sports car.
