No response to Southland mayors' letter over journalism job cuts

Newshub to close its Dunedin newsroom

Newshub would now have to rely on its Christchurch-based bureau or freelancers to cover Otago and Southland, an area of 65,000 square kilometres. Just this week, the Dunedin news duo covered the major breaking news of the Countdown supermarket stabbings. They have also covered stories ranging from the effect of Covid-19 on Queenstown and the future of the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter. Newshub/Supplied Veteran Newshub reporter Dave Goosselink is based in Dunedin’s Newshub newsroom. They were also in court for the appearance of the accused, and press conferences about the attack. Goosselink declined to comment on Thursday. Newshub used a freelance camera operator to cover a Dunedin sport s story on Thursday morning.

'We deserve better': Mayor pushes petition for Newshub to keep its Dunedin office

Newshub/Supplied Veteran Newshub reporter Dave Goosselink has been covering the stabbing incident at central Dunedin’s Countdown supermarket this week. That meant they would have to cover an area of 65,000 square kilometres. “We deserve better than having to wait for someone to catch the next flight to cover big stories in this part of the country,” Hawkins said. “The less reporting we have on local issues the easier it is for disinformation to spread, to the detriment of all of our communities.” More than 900 people had signed the petition by 10am on Friday. Hamish McNeilly/Stuff Dunedin mayor Aaron Hawkins wants Newshub to keep its Dunedin office open.

Otago and Southland mayors join MP in support of Dunedin's Newshub office

Newshub/Supplied Veteran Newshub reporter Dave Goosselink, pictured, and camera man Grant Findlay may lose their jobs as the network considers shutting down its Dunedin bureau. “I support a viable fourth estate as a central feature of a healthy democracy and within that lens I would highlight the need to retain journalistic capability in our regional newsrooms.” The Dunedin office covered 65,000 square kilometres, and Leary questioned how a Christchurch-based office would cover news from Otago and Southland. The network had operated an office in Dunedin since the early 1990s, and had two reporters covering the area until late 2015. “Regionally focused journalism contributes significantly by informing and valuing our communities,” Leary wrote.’
