how can you shake a man s hand one minute and turn around the next second he s dead. reporter: charles banks can t seem to fathom what happened right in front of his home on this dark and lonely stretch of north keys road in brandywine monday night just before 10:00. his son s good friend lawrence garner jr. known as j.r. was killed in a violent car crash. his passenger robert mitchell jr. was critically injured. their car broadsided by an suv that prince george s county police say was driven by an fbi agent suspected of being drunk. it s just terrible. i can t stop crying. i just want him to come home. reporter: j.r. garner was an 18-year-old 2010 graduate of brandywine s given park high school. he worked at home depot in upper marlboro and was killed pulling out of the bank s driveway. he was hit at the car door, you know, and took him took them about a half hour to cut him out of there. reporter: prince george s county police arrested a 37- year-old fib agent
meet a 40-year-old temple hills man they encountered on a chat line. essentially the arrangement was for some kind of apparently sexually liaison to take place in the victim s vehicle. reporter: using a cell phone police say this man, then 19- year-old tommy whack, instructed the man to park on behind the school. the defendant tommy whack got in the car and near as we can tell grabbed him and shot him killing him. it appeared as the victim was shot he was trying to turn away from it. so basically he shot him in the back. he clearly killed this man in cold blood, left him for dead and took his cell phone so he couldn t for help. reporter: a woman who lives nearby heard gunshots and called police. from the surveillance tape police spotted whack and his cousin leaving the scene headed toward their home nearby, the same direction canine units tracked them to. the investigators found pictures of him posing with the gun on his home computer. a jury convicted whack of second
