South Bostonâs St. Patrickâs Day Breakfast, a decades-old local political tradition known for gratuitous glad-handing and bad jokes from Massachusetts lawmakers, will go on this year â albeit virtually.
Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, state Senator Nick Collins of Boston has announced the virtual event â
one of the earliest scuttled by the coronavirus outbreak that began a year ago â will be broadcast on NESN and WROL from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 21.

For the second year in a row, COVID-19 has forced organizers to nix the South Boston St. Patrickâs Day parade, one of the cityâs largest annual celebrations.
Dave Falvey, the commander and president of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, which organizes the March parade, confirmed the cancellation on Tuesday, citing the stateâs pandemic-related crowd restrictions. He noted there is no way for the event, which can draw more than a million revelers to Southieâs streets, barrooms, and house parties, to be held given the realities of the public health crisis.
