2002 Maryland Lacrosse Misses NCAA Men s Championship: A Look Back

4 minute read For 17-straight seasons, the Terps have appeared in the NCAA Championship tournament. But in 2002, Maryland men’s lacrosse didn’t make the cut. Maryland has been a staple in the NCAA Championship for nearly two decades, and the program was similarly strong in the years prior. Since the inception of the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1971, the Terps have only missed the contest seven times (1980, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1999, 2002). The expectation is Maryland will play in the postseason in 2021, which would make 18-consecutive trips to the tournament. But this isn’t about the Terps’ future or present. 12/17/2020 | Expanded Lacrosse Festival Better Fit For June

June is the better time of year for a week-long lacrosse festival in the long-term, but the good news is a new and broader focus will be shined on an event that was once a highlight on the sport’s summer calendar. Adding a youth component to the college and adult competition will bring an added component to the Ocean City Lacrosse Classic, which has for years attracted about 100 teams in a variety of age divisions for men and women. In the mid- to late-90s and early-2000s, the tournament attracted some of the best collegiate lacrosse players in the world who would often come to Ocean City for the White Marlin Open and stay through the lacrosse festival. There was high-quality lacrosse on the field on the men and women side.

12/16/2020 | Week-Long Lacrosse Festival For Youth, Adults Eyed Next Summer; Indoor Tourney Also Under Consideration

File photo of a local youth tournament OCEAN CITY Ocean City could get a three-for-one lacrosse tournament deal with a single investment after resort officials this week approved an agreement with some of the sports’ heavyweights. At a Tourism Commission meeting last month, Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) President Steve Pastusak briefed members on a proposed expansion of the Ocean City Lacrosse Classic, held every August since 1993. The tournament includes men’s and women’s elite divisions featuring some of the top collegiate players in the country, along with masters and grand masters and other divisions. However, due to competing tourneys, the Ocean City Lacrosse Classic has seen its popularity wane in recent years and is in need of an overhaul.
