FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) A few people came together Wednesday afternoon to voice their displeasure with the changes planned for Fargo’s Lindenwood Park.
The Fargo Park District wants to move Lindenwood’s road loop to a higher location, away from the Red River and remove up to 82 trees.
Opponents of the plan met at Rheault Farm, where the Fargo Park Board was holding a retreat.
One woman says more public input about the changes should’ve been considered.
“Why don’t we close the road, make it trails that would be handicapped and elderly accessible, use the money for really nice trails, update the shelters,” suggested Karen Mann.
Despite pleas to save trees, Fargo park board will go ahead with new road through Lindenwood Park

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – People are speaking out against an improvement project at Lindenwood Park.
“It’s a road improvement project so what it entails is essentially creating a new road loop for Roger Maris Drive,” Fargo Parks District Parks Director Dave Bietz said.
The loop is in major need of improvements says Bietz.
“The existing road as it is right now today is at a lower flood elevation and is made out of asphalt, so it’s in need of some repairs. We decided to move the road up to a higher flood elevation and make it out of concrete. It is just too close to the river and it is constantly inundated with flood waters, ” said Bietz.
The group wants to see a balance of natural and human recreational spaces in the park, with no removal of healthy trees. They also believe flooding issues can be addressed by raising the existing asphalt loop road with cement, and they don’t want a new parking lot near the main shelter.

Keeping his feet warm with three pairs of socks, Mike Graalum, a friend of Taggart’s and fellow organizer of Defend Lindenwood Park, said the park district never solicited input from the public about the project.
“And if they don’t there will be people in trees and there will be chaos in three months,” Graalum said. Many people involved in opposing the Enbridge Line 3 oil pipeline in northern Minnesota are also critical of the Fargo Park Board’s plan for Lindenwood and say they will come to defend the trees, Graalum said.

The Fargo Park District is planning to move this stretch of Roger Maris Drive that runs along the Red River at Lindenwood Park to higher level. FARGO For decades, the Red River has inundated the loop road in south Fargo s Lindenwood Park whenever the water reaches the minor flood stage of 18.5 feet, but plans to rebuild the road next year aim to change that.
