PUTRAJAYA, May 4 The Road Transport Department (RTD) has collected RM3.147 million in traffic summonses within two weeks, following its 70 per cent discount offer in conjunction with the department’s 75th Platinum Jubilee celebration, said its director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim.
He said the collection involved 45,317 summonses issued nationwide.
“Take this opportunity to settle the summons because this offer will only last until June 11 and we will not extend the discount period,” he said during the RTD’s 75th anniversary with the media programme, today.
He said 4,297 people were killed in 2020 compared to 5,764 in 2019. Apart from enforcement work by the authorities, the fall in the number of accidents and fatalities can be attributed to the movement control order, he said after opening the new Kuala Pilah JPJ office.
Zailani said the number of road accidents also fell to 418,237 last year from 567,516 in 2019, a 26.3% drop.
Zailani said revenue collected by the department in 2020 fell marginally to RM4.1bil from the RM4.32bil received in 2019. It does not upset me if our revenue falls if there is a decrease in road accidents and fatalities. The JPJ will find ways to increase revenue by digitalising its services rather than issuing summonses and compounds to motorists, he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The integrity of Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel is and will always be a priority, says newly appointed JPJ director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim. I hope to elevate the department s positive image to a higher level and improve integrity among our personnel. We will do so without forsaking collaboration with other enforcement departments and agencies, he said in a statement after paying a courtesy visit to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki on Monday (Dec 29).
Zailani said JPJ would also practice an open door policy and welcomes any recommendations from the public.
