PETALING JAYA: As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the country, civil society groups and politicians say a snap election should be avoided.
Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said calling a general election now was not the right thing to do with Covid-19 showing no signs of abating.
“The situation is very serious going by the daily figures, which hover at around 2,000 new cases. We should learn from the lessons of the Sabah election (in September).

The situation is very serious, going by the daily figures, which hover at around 2,000 new cases. We should learn from the lessons of the Sabah election (in September). We ended up with cases going out of control despite the Health Ministry s best efforts, Tan Sri Lee said, adding that even standard operating procedures in place during the Sabah election did not help.
Lim said opposition parties need to be united to face the 15th general election. We will meet next year… among the matters to be discussed is the formation of a grand coalition. This much I can say… the rest let’s wait until after the meeting,” he told reporters after taking a ride on the Penang ferry here today.
The grand coalition idea was mooted by Pejuang Tanah Air deputy president Datuk Marzuki Yahya and Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal for the opposition to forge a strong front to face the next general election.
Nevertheless, the proposal has been met with mixed reactions from various quarters, with some fearing that the move might marginalise PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and others expressing concern over the possible return of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) may or may not join the “grand coalition” of Opposition parties, depending on whether or not it accepts lawmakers currently aligned with the government but who have ongoing court cases.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has seconded a proposal from Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) for all Opposition parties and lawmakers to consolidate and form a “grand coalition”.
Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said cooperation among the Opposition parties is necessary if they each wanted to go head to head with the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the next general election that is widely believed will happen next year.
